Milford George Greutman

February 17, 1928 - April 16, 2022

Milford George Greutman, 94, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, April 16, 2022. Born on February 17, 1928 in Maroa, Illinois (God’s Country), he was the son of Vernon Andrew and Anna (Oltmanns) Greutman. Milford’s life was hallmarked by hard work coupled with humor and a love for God, his family and friends. In 1951, Mel was smitten with love at first sight at the local roller rink by his loving wife, Betty Joan (Creighton). He was an avid athlete in high school and carried his awesome skill set to the army, where he was a standout on the military basketball team while serving in the Korean War. Growing up on the farm, Milford developed one of his lifelong mottos: “If I can’t fix it, it ain’t broke.” Milford’s life was marked by dedication at every stage. He followed in his father’s footsteps, where he worked for Phillips Petroleum Company for 35 years, retiring at the age of 57. The pinnacle of his devotion was apparent while caring for his loving wife throughout her 10 year battle with Alzheimer’s and her 1.4 years of at home Hospice. He was never idle. Between a full-time job, raising four children, catering to his grandchildren, coaching, attending his children’s athletic events, and golfing, Mel still made time to minister in his local church, the First Baptist Church of Flat Rock, where he was a deacon for 42 years. Seeing Mel mow the church lawn while driving his handlebar riding lawn mower (formally named “Teddy”) would give a kick to those traveling home from work down Gibraltar Rd. Milford is survived by 2 siblings, Vernon J. Greutman and Eileen Black of Illinois; son, Edward (Judy) Greutman of Cypress, TX; 3 daughters, Neta Inman and Cindy Greutman of Woodhaven and Melinda Calinda of Brownstown; multiple grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, great-nieces, nephews and great-nephews. Milford was preceded in death by many loved ones, notably his loving wife of 66 years, Betty and sisters Esther & Evelyn. A visitation and celebration of Milford’s life will be held on Saturday, April 23, 2022, at the First Baptist Church of Flat Rock, 24180 Gibraltar Rd, Flat Rock, Michigan 48134. The family will receive friends for visitation from 10 am – 12 pm, followed immediately by the service. Burial in the Huron Valley Cemetery will take place directly afterward. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the following: Veterans Financial & Estate Preservation, LLC 37637 Five Mile Road #304 Livonia, Michigan 48154 Betty’s Playground Maintenance First Baptist Church of Flat Rock 24180 Gibraltar Rd Flat Rock, Michigan 48134
