James J. Mathews Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

James J. Mathews, age 82, of Cape Coral, FL (but a Downriver guy at heart), passed away on Sunday, August 22, 2021. Born July 21, 1939 on Church Street in Flat Rock, MI, he was the son of Frank and Dorothy (Herrmann) Mathews. Teaching was his profession, but more importantly, his passion. He started his career as an educator employed by Flat Rock Public Schools and found his home with the Trenton Public School system. He influenced the hearts and minds of young adults attending Trenton High School for over 30 years, until his retirement. Each person who knows him undoubtedly has a story to make you smile. He had a big personality, loved to laugh & joke, and loved his family and friends fiercely. He gave generously and lived well. He was a true outdoorsman appreciating time in a deer blind, layout boat, or reeling in a big catch. Time spent with friends during this time was more important to him than how successful the hunting trip was. He cherished these moments and lifelong friendships. Like others in his family, he enjoyed every moment spent with family and friends. He lived an amazingly full life and will be remembered dearly by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Nancy Mathews; and sister, Carol Mathews. He is survived by his daughter Jill (Tom) Corcoran; Margaret Chaffin who made his heart smile; his brother Donald (Teresa) Mathews; his sister-in-law Joan Tarr; granddaughter Taylor Corcoran; grandson Bryce Corcoran; nieces Diane (Xavier) Maury, Laura Schaeffer, Diane Tarr, Barbara Friedman; nephew Brandon (Allison Stillar) Mathews; and several great nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place and friends and family are welcome to visit at Big Al’s Sports Bar and Grill on Friday, August 27, 2021 between 1 PM - 4 PM for a celebration of life. You are encouraged to dress in James’ favorite attire: casual, camouflage or blaze orange. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to organizations advancing causes he was passionate about: science and wildlife. Memorial donations may be made to H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute or Ducks Unlimited.
