Edwin J. Maloney III Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Edwin J. Maloney, III, age 74, of Dundee Twp. Michigan passed away on Tuesday, June 8, 2021 surrounded by his loving family. He was in the loving care of his wife, Joan, throughout his courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Born on September 30, 1946 in Detroit, Michigan, he was the son of Edwin and Rosemary (West) Maloney. On June 30, 1978 he married Joan Hastings in Wyandotte, MI. Ed loved his wife and after visiting Ireland and the Grand Canyon, they were looking forward to continuing their travels together. His love for his daughters was unwavering. He once shared he "was proud to watch his daughters become the women they are, cutting their own paths in life". He enjoyed time with his grandchildren who adored him and he loved being their Papa. In his down time he spent his summers in Lexington, MI, played frisbee golf and pickleball, snuck in his power naps ("Just resting my eyes"), and was committed to getting his workouts in everyday. He was a dedicated fan of all Detroit sports teams and the University of Notre Dame football. He was also on an endless search for the best ice cream in Michigan. He wasn't often the first to chime into a conversation but when he spoke, he was the ultimate teacher, and spoke with an intent to impart a life lesson- sometimes witty and bringing a room to laughter and sometimes thought provoking. While enjoying all of these things, he was constantly planning for the next game, the next recruit, and the next season as well as keeping tabs on his 'has-beens.' Ed was a teacher, athletic director, coach, and mentor and touched many people's lives for over 50 years at various high schools in Southeast Michigan. As a teacher, he brought his passion for learning, questioning, psychology, history, and philosophy to his students. He loved all sports but he was most passionate about football and lacrosse. Throughout his career, he was given approximately 22 awards, including four Hall of Fame awards. He started four different high school lacrosse programs before moving to the collegiate level and starting the Siena Heights University Men's Lacrosse Program. He had a successful career there for 13 years and planned to retire June 30, 2021. Ed is survived by his wife of 43 years, Joan Maloney; daughters, Sandra (David Stuckless) Maloney, Melissa (Bryan) Rizzo, Krystin (Derek) Oesterreicher and Jessica (Kurt) Schiappacasse; grandchildren Kyle, Brady, Lukas, Anthony, Edwin and three on the way. Also survived by Ame (Sekani) Maloney, Meg (John) Rudolph, Anaya, Gabi, Jordan, Austin. Edwin was preceded in death by his parents and sister Colleen Maloney. A funeral mass will be held Saturday June 19, 2021 at 1:00 pm at St. Dominic Chapel, E Siena Heights Dr, Adrian, MI 49221. Reception to follow at Benincasa Hall on SHU campus.
